The Bike Walk Jingle Contest drew to a close Saturday with a showcase of the top five finalists at Ritz Theater, where the winners of the contest were announced at the end of the night. Finalists Luke Warm and the Cool Hands, Audra Tracy, The Jing Jings!, Glen Everhart and Michael Loonan each played a 15-minute set, including their Bike Walk Move jingles, and shared their stories of biking and walking.

For example, Luke Warm and the Cool Hands rode their bicycles to the Ritz Theater from Saint Louis Park. Audra Tracy rides daily, averaging 25 miles each morning. And Glen Everhart shares a car with his 16-year-old son and each year sets a goal of riding 3,000 miles!

At the end of the showcase, emcee Michael Rainville, partnership marketing manager for Meet Minneapolis, brought Hilary Reeves of Bike Walk Twin Cities on stage to announce the winner of the contest. After much debate, the judges decided on a tie between Luke Warm and the Cool Hands and Glen Everhart! See both performances here:

The jug band and the interactive musician/comedian will both have their jingles played on Cities 97 and other stations this summer and will split the prizes:

Studio recording time from The Art Institutes International (Luke Warm and the Cool Hands)

$500 gift card to Music Connection (shared)

A new Sun Revolutions CB-26 bicycle from Behind Bars Bicycle Shop (Glen Everhart)

Congratulations to the winners, and a big thanks to everyone who entered the contest!

But, do you know what the new campaign is all about?

Bike Walk Move is a campaign produced and supported by Bike Walk Twin Cities designed to encourage residents across the Twin Cities to bike, walk and you guessed it— move! Intended to raise public awareness of bicycling and walking as viable transportation options, the campaign aims to engage communities intimately around bicycling and walking-related issues including safety, health and economic benefits.

Key pieces of the Bike Walk Move campaign include:

The Bike Walk Move Web site (BikeWalkMove.org): If you’ve not yet poked around other parts of the site, check it out. There are safety tips, suggestions for gear and equipment, and resources for finding the right bikeway, path or trail—all designed to make biking and walking more a little easier.

The Bike Walk Move Stories blog (www.bikewalkmove.org/stories): This is where we are now, and where we highlight stories of everyday people who are bicycling or walking more as part of their daily lives.

Bike Walk Move community event participation: Bike Walk Move representatives will be at multiple community events throughout the summer, such as the 6th annual FLOW Northside Arts Crawl, from 3-8 p.m. on Sat., July 30.

Bike Walk Move advertising/sponsorship campaign: An ad campaign with the theme, “I Choose…,” features Twin Cities residents using their bicycles or walking to get around. Other elements of the campaign focus on the economic benefits of bicycling and walking, noting that each car a family owns costs, on average, $8,000 per year. The ad campaign will appear in multiple Twin Cities community newspapers and on Metro Transit buses and bus shelters. See more of the ads in the “For the Media” section.

Bike Walk Move on Twitter and Facebook: You’ll also find Bike Walk Move on Twitter and Facebook, with stories, news and information helpful to those seeking to walk or ride.

The Bike Walk Move campaign follows the installation of several Bike Walk Twin Cities-funded infrastructure improvements to encourage bicycling and walking. Some notable projects include the Nice Ride bicycle-sharing program, the RiverLake Greenway, the University of Minnesota Bicycle Center (later this year) and more than 1,000 new bicycle slots at racks in Minneapolis schools, businesses and community centers.

What are your initial thoughts about the new Bike Walk Move campaign?
