Emerson & Fremont Bike Lanes Opening

What? Dedicated bike lanes (including some stretches with a buffer zone!) have been added to Emerson and Fremont Avenues North (parallel one-way streets) between Plymouth Avenue and 33rd Avenue North (just north of Lowry Avenue). There will be a bicycle-detection stop light at the intersection of Emerson and Lowry. There is also new bicycle parking along Lowry Avenue and along Emerson and Fremont. Hennepin County also installed a combination bus/bike shelter at the Lowry/Penn intersection. Bike lanes have also been completed on 7th Street North, for easier connections to downtown Minneapolis and on 10th Avenue North, connecting to Northeast.

When? Sat., Oct. 8, 2011, as part of October’s Bike Walk Week.

Sign up to participate in the group ride (and to reserve a Nice Ride bike) here: http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/JPHC2RJ

Where?

Part 1: Gather at Lowry Ave. North and Fremont Ave. North in North Minneapolis (across from North Regional Library) starting at 11:00 a.m. After remarks and ribbon cutting, a parade with antique and custom bicycles, as well as Nice Ride bikes (and you, on foot or on bicycle) takes off at 11:30 a.m. from that location.

Part 2: Activities at West Broadway & Fremont (go to parking lot behind The Cookie Cart)

  • Slow bike races and other activities (thanks to JB Hood Bikes)
  • Face painting w/Willie
  • Food from Amos & Amos barbecue

The Bicycle ride to Venture North Bike Walk Center will wait at West Broadway & Fremont till noon to depart for Venture North Bike, Walk & Coffee at 1830 Glenwood Ave. N..

Why? The new bike lanes on Emerson and Fremont Avenues will give bike commuters and recreational cyclists easier access to many different destinations across North Minneapolis, and easier and safer access to downtown locations.
